The Extension Master Gardener℠ (EMGV) program of Haywood County has had another successful year in Haywood County. Here are just a few highlights of some of their achievements and accomplishments from 2019 as compiled by Sam Marshall, Horticulture Extension Agent.

It is with pleasure that we share this 2019 year-end report. NC State Extension and our Volunteers are charged with the development of our communities by reaching out to and education our underserved and limited resource residents of Haywood County in a variety of ways.

All told, the EMGVs of Haywood County:

  • Donated 5,854 hours of service, a total dollar value of $148,867;
  • Attended 1,600 hours of advanced training;
  • Reached a total of 8,533 residents in Haywood County, approximately 13.5% of the County’s total population;

School and Community Gardens continued to be a large focus for the Horticulture Program in 2019. EMGVs taught 1st and 2nd graders at both Junaluska and Riverbend Elementary Schools, with spring and fall programs reaching nearly 500 students at both locations combined. Volunteers at the Canton Giving Garden at the Canton Branch Library offered 18 programs and reached nearly 600 visitors of all ages in 2019 with educational programs and garden tours.

We welcomed 18 new EMGVs into our program this year. New volunteers attend over 50+ hours of horticultural training, must pass an exam, and complete 40 hours of service before they are certified as EMGVs. All of our EMGVs worked very hard in 2019 and have made many positive impacts to the residents of Haywood County, their gardens and the communities in which they live. We are excited to see what the New Year has in store.
